Swimming is one of those sports that’s great for both serious and casual exercise, but like all others you have to keep upping your game to be able to keep upping your game to get anywhere. Of course, that always leads to one goal: improving your speed. To help, here are five apps that will help you to improve your swimming technique and increase your average speed.
Speedo Fit: A fairly extensive app to tart with, Speedo Fit covers pretty much all of your basic needs for documenting and improving your swimming training. There’s a time log, options to set your own goals and targets, a search function to find swimming pools all over the country, and to make things interesting there are virtual challenges you can complete like ‘Escape from Alcatraz’
swim-trainer: This is a portal to an website dedicated to the love of swimming. Designed to ensure people get the best information they can, swim-trainer focuses on the best equipment you can buy (like swim watches), and includes training plans, and a community blog so you can read about what other swimmers have been doing, and possibly let them know about you. [iOS — Free]
pocket swimmer: This one is a training guide filled to the brim with videos to help you improve your technique, because without good technique your aren’t going to improve your speed at all. With topics such as common mistakes, and how-to guides on all four swimming styles, this is ideal to help you improve how you’re swimming, which will improve how fast you’re swimming. Swimming Strength Training: Contrary to what you might have believed, not all swimming training is done in the pool. As it is with all forms of physical activity, your ability comes from how much punishment your muscles are willing to take before they start to wear out. By doing weight training you are working those muscles without tiring yourself out as much, and with it will come better swimming endurance. This app contains a list of weight exercises specifically tailored for swimmers, so that you have no excuse to miss the training. [Android — Free]
Swim Tracker: Nice and simple, this is an app for keeping a log of your swimming times so that you can see how much you’ve improved or worsened over time. There aren’t any fancy things like graphs, but you can directly compare your most recent score against your all time best for motivation. [Windows Phone — Free]
